A programming language is a system of notation for describing computations. A useful programming language must therefore be suited for both description (i.e., for human writers and readers of programs) and for computation (i.e., for efficient implementation on computers). But human beings and computers are so different that it is difficult to find notational devices that are well suited to the capabilities of both.

The first holistic intrusion detection system for Linux. This daemon is the first attempt at detecting at-entry intrusions at the scope of several subsystems. Signatures are described using an "attack sequence language" that allows describing known vulnerabilities at the granularity of system calls and specific events. Furthermore, the system is capable of detecting unknown vulnerabilities by the use of trigger events and normal activity signatures. Thereby keeping false-positives and false-negatives within acceptable bounds. This was a collaborative effort with Dr. Raju Rangaswami, Igor Hernandez, and Joseph A. Marrero.
